Body Shape and Waist
Termites have a broad, straight waist with no visible pinch between the thorax and abdomen. Ants have a distinctive pinched waist (petiole) that is clearly visible. If the waist looks pinched, it's likely an ant.
Wings and Antennae
Termite swarmers have two pairs of equal-length wings that are longer than the body. Flying ants have unequal wings — the front pair is noticeably larger. Termite antennae are straight; ant antennae are elbowed.
What to Do Next
If you find swarmers — of either species — indoors, collect a sample in a sealed bag or jar. Do not spray them. Swarmers are reproductive and indicate a nearby colony. Call a pest control company for identification and assessment.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do swarmers mean?
Swarmers indicate a mature colony nearby that has reached reproductive capacity. For termites, this warrants an immediate inspection. For ants, the colony may be inside or outside the structure.
What month do termites swarm?
In Central Texas, termites most commonly swarm from February through April, especially during warm days after rain.
Should I vacuum up swarmers?
Vacuuming removes the visible swarmers but does not address the colony. Save a sample for identification before doing anything else.
