Spider Identification in Central Texas

How to identify brown recluse, black widow, and wolf spiders in Central Texas and what to do if you find them.

Brown Recluse

Tan to medium brown, 1/4 to 1/2 inch long, with a distinctive violin-shaped (fiddle) marking on the cephalothorax. Found in undisturbed areas — inside boxes, behind furniture, in cluttered storage spaces, and in garages. Not aggressive but will bite if trapped.

Black Widows

Black with a red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen. They build irregular webs close to the ground in dark, sheltered areas — under porch edges, inside seldom-used structures, and in debris piles. Venom is medically significant.

Wolf Spiders

Brown and hairy, ranging from half an inch to over an inch long. Commonly confused with brown recluse, but wolf spiders are larger, hairy, and lack the violin marking. Fast-moving ground hunters that often enter structures during cooler months.

Why Spiders Return

Spiders follow insects. Reducing perimeter insects through regular service, eliminating clutter near the structure, and sealing entry points reduces spider activity more effectively than targeting spiders directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is brown recluse common in Central Texas?

Yes. They are present in the region but bites are uncommon. They prefer undisturbed, sheltered areas.

What is the most effective way to reduce spiders?

Target the insects they feed on with perimeter treatment, reduce harborage and clutter near the structure, and seal gaps that allow entry.

Does quarterly pest control help with spiders?

Yes. Reducing prey insects through regular perimeter service reduces spider populations over time.
